No, StemBox is not exclusively for girls, we would love to have more boys participate!
While we focus our marketing rhetoric and copy on girls in order to improve the gender gap in STEM (where women still only make up 29% of the field) we strongly believe that boys are an integral part of the equation. We need our boys to see strong female role models in science as well as understand how to cooperate in a field where women will work as their equals.
Our kits are designed with girls in mind, but who are we to say what boys and girls should like, hence the largely gender-neutral product arriving at your door every month. Our kits focus on the science and not just on the gender.
Yes, we use female pronouns in our protocols. No, we are not trying to isolate boys with our language. We believe it is an empowering conversation to have with boys about how pronouns can influence our perspectives in life. Girls read male pronouns in most aspects of their daily lives and we're excited to have boys engaged in the conversation on this topic.
On occasion, we have included jewelry and nail art, but we strongly believe that boys and girls can choose how they express themselves in whatever way they desire. Just like dinosaurs and dirt aren't just for boys, makeup and jewelry aren't just for girls.
We have many boys subscribed to and engaging with StemBox on a regular basis and we hope to introduce more in the future.
Just remember to have fun and express yourself!
